Bed basics: In praise of 'large single' rather than 'small double'.
Socks that feel warm as soon as you put them on in the mornings and keep your feet toasty all day?
They're here. Made partly from bamboo (Bambusoideae), they seem to defy the laws of physics, feeling warm as soon as they touch your feet.If you're a fan of the mathematician character Ian Malcolm in Crichton's Jurassic Park, you can go totally black and never have to match a pair of socks again. Otherwise some nice stripey or starry designs are available, all in man size 8-11 and woman size 4-7. I'm most happy to plug the maker, BAM. And now you have a reason to request socks for krimble.
Waterstones Gower Street, with books designed to please; lots of them.

Am I the only one who loves the American first lady's conical red Christmas trees? They're striking; they're symmetrical; they're minimalist and just imagine the colonnade filled with folks in sparkling gowns and tuxedos. The trees are also part of a larger theme that matches the colours of the American flag. This is part of a stage set by a designer who thinks big. Well done.

NB since we're on the subject of flags, check out Simon Kuper's FT article on modern America's rising 'European Dream'.
